Blackbirds everywhere

Every time I go or look outside I see loads of blackbirds. They seem to be enjoying eating the brightly-coloured berries that are so prevalent at this time of year. To my mind they are a more festive bird than the robin, simply because there are so many of them. And of course, they are mentioned in the song "The 12 Days of Christmas"; they are the "four calling birds".

I've not seen any hedgehog activity recently, not that I expect to at this time of year. However Gigibird who lives on the south coast of England told me a few days ago that her two hog visitors are still active! I wonder if they don't intend hibernating so long as she keeps supplying food for them.

  1. We are also virtually on the south coast, and although we haven't seen a "wild" hoggie since early November, Harry and / or Tictac still seem to be popping out every evening for their dinner (and the weather has been appaling here this week).

  2. That's so funny - only this morning I had 2 blackbirds (male & female)visit my back even checked out the hedgehog saucer....talking of which yesterday morning I found a hedgehog poo on the saucer! That's the thanks I get. They have also pulled some of the hay from the house.....

  3. The blackbirds do seem to be visiting gardens more in this cold snap. Every day since the snow arrived here there have been up to six of them chasing each other around the lawn.

  4. Hi there G L, Ah… we’ve seen lots of Blackbirds here too. Fortunately no hogs… it was -12 deg here this morning.

Just wanted to stop by and wish you a Merry Christmas and all the best for 2010 to you and yours :-D

  5. Santa brought me a wildlife camera for Christmas. Of course, the night before that, the food stopped being taken :-(

Anyway, have now got the camera set up and connected to a PC. And at 22:04 tonight, Harry wandered into shot, disappeared inside the shelter where the food is, and re-emerged 6 minutes later.

The slightly worrying thing is that he approached from the opposite direction to his house, so has he found a better offer and is just coming back for a nibble?
